Why pretzels are called pretzels?
"
The German word [bretzel, pretzel] comes ultimately from tha hypothetical medieval Latin
*brachiatellum
, a diminutive form of
brachitum
, bracelet'; it hence means etymologically ring-shaped biscuit'.
...
Bretzel. Frequently misspelt Pretzel, is a hard, brittle roll of bread twisted into a letter
B
, and common in Germany and among the Germans in this country, who eat them with their beer.
...
Pretzel...The word is from the German, and some believe it refers to the Latin word
pretium
, "reward," as in a little gift to a child. Others trace the roots to the Latin
brachium
, arm...
...
Picenum
was a region to the northeast of Rome, corresponding in part fo modern-day Marches. The
bread of Picenum
was a type of sweet, dry flatbread consisting of flour kneaded with grape juice, which was soaked in milk before it was eaten.
How -- ah, these pretzels suck…

Понятно же, что Pretzel происходит от английского "pretty" в значении "прелестный", потому что что может быть лучше кружечки холодного пива теплым мюнхенским вечером в пивной Айингер, в ожидании свиной рульки в перечном соусе?
